I just refilled my wife's Grand Am last week.  I don't have the directions
handy, but  the blue is the low side.  I originally did the conversion last
summer, but had to refill the system because she hit somebody and put a nice
hole in the condensor.   I think you should leave the valve core in the
original port.  If you look at the new one, there should be a tab to push
open the original valve.  This is good because I had to remove the R134 port
after noticing a nice hiss from it leaking.  It was easy enough to unscrew
the quick disconnect fitting and the original valve stopped the system from
leaking.
