Re: scirocco-L-digest V1 #1895

Rear wing discussion:

Have article in files from R&T with MKI VW wind tunnel tests. My GMP
front spoiler might have paid for itself in fuel savings, the rear Zender
spoiler, well, I'd still have to be driving the car. For a brief and not
too technical look at aerodynamics, I've found Simon McBeath's
"Competition Car Downforce", Haynes, 1998 informative. Also the
combination of "Kammback" and rear spoiler on my MKII helps keep the
raindrops off at speed after a couple of wiper passes to clear it.
FWIW, it seemed Kamai had use of VWs wind tunnel, so their designs had
aero data.

Bumper bs

The 78's 5 mph bumpers were a mixed blessing. Helped in braille parking
on city streets, but when cute teenage gal in old Mustang struck me when
I late braked (mistimed traffic light) early in the morning, the old boy
meets girl scenario never played out. I was just pissed off and the guy
she was paying attention to claimed "No damage!" so we went on our way.
But she had pushed in bumper and it had rebounded, like it was designed to.
Not too long after, pipe for ss Stebro muffler cracked and I was forever
trying to get it repaired. Finally replaced muffler with Ansa.

And I probably won't replace the 2.5 mph bumpers on my 87 'cause my
insurance won't allow it (IE I pay for any comprehensive damage).

RE: California Squeegee

Sorry about prior nonsensical post. BOught First Pass Co.'s "Auto Dry
Blade" at Cleve. auto show while waiting for delinquent brother. It was
made by local firm and used local firms Santoprene polymer, I believe
(BTDT with small co.). Well, soon after father gave me California
Squeegee. Auto Dry is similar to 12" long oversized wiper blade mounted
in ~1.5" diam. cylinder. Problem is blade pulls its barb out of cylinder
at the near end under use. Have siliconed it back in, dunno if it fixes
it. CA Squeegee has Silicone rubber blade terminated in a "T" shape that
works better, at least while new and sharp. Either is handier to use and
store than a genuine chamois and if you drop it, can be thoroughly
cleaned. But...I am lazy and sometimes just detach blower from shop vac
when I wash the Jeep so I can reinstall cover quickly. Neither squeegee
worked well on Jeep's ribs on roof. I agree with previous post they are OK
on flat panels.

RE: Shift point bruhaha

Raven's book had rudimentary BASIC program to calculate shift points. I
had the idea to print out the points on a transparent mailing label and
putting on mirror or windshield, but it's quite simple on stock 16V 1.8.
Run it to redline in 1st. Other gears go down in rpm, but I no longer race
16V, so never printed them out.

RE: leaking oil filter

If you remove the mount to effect repair, new "O" rings and a hardening
sealer like Permatex on threads may prevent reoccurence.

Whatever happened to the cracked radiator core support/reinforcing
bracket idea. Anybody game to design/produce one (I'm not volunteering)?
