European 16v ignition question

I have heard and seen a points distributor for the 16v but was wondering what 
other types were available in the 1.8 version. I am thinking there has to be 
something inbetween points and Motronic similar to the MK1 GTI type where it 
only had an ignition module and no knock control box.
I could be wrong but could one of you guys across the pond with a 16v 
elaborate on whats connected to your distributor?
