RE: ABA swap questions

My take on the ABA:

First off , the ABA is a highly tunable swap when done correctly with either
OBDI or OBDII electronics. The motor responds well to cams, headers and
chip tuning and can put down roughly 140HP if worked over right.

Several past list and present list memebers have done and ducumented the
swap.....John Ryland and Nigel Heron...write ups are on Nigels page at
www.psycode.com. Nate Pierce and Dave Dawson also did full swaps and I
think Eric Soltwedel is close to finishing his as well. Once again the list
can provide extreme knowledge of the pitfalls should you take this route.

That said, the swap is kinda pointless when you already have a 16v. Simply
shell out $500 or so for a 2.0 16v lump and buy the beer and pizzas and in a
weekend you get 135 HP.

If you want to go the ABA turned into 16v route, continue reading and I will
document how to do it.

In stock form, a 16v head is a direct fit onto the ABA block, you have to
change the crank pulley, intermediate shaft and oil pump for the 16v parts.
The longer timing belt that is also needed is a factory part that Virtual
World can easily get. The block is 16mm taller than a stock 16v so a spacer
or custom downpipe has to be made.

Unfortunetely all this leaves you with 8:1 compression and pistons that
smack valves. TT can cut reliefs into the pistons for $100. 8:1
compression would be great for a very high boost turbo setup but sucks
around town and just doesn't move enough air off boost to take advantage of
the 16v head flow characteristics.

You can increase the compression by having the block decked or using a
thinner headgasket or go with custom $$$ forged pistons. Another
alternative recommended by TT is to have the rods rebushed for 2.0 16v wrist
pins and source out some pistons. Rebushing the rods runs about $100 and
yields 9.25:1 compression with a stock headgasket.

In the end you get a resonable likeness of the Euro "tallblock" 16v motor
that came on the 95 GTI. However, that motor is EFI using a digifant system
and puts down 150 HP in stock form. A home brew ABA 16v "might" make 140 HP
before modification.

Importing an actual ABF euro 16v motor would be almost impossible, as there
aren't very many and it would never be a legal swap as the motor was never
offered here in the States.

Hope this helps.
