REPLY (long-ish): I need an Alternator!!

I hope I am not being patronizing, but here is what I would check first before running out and spending $$ on another alternator:

Did you remove the alternator and take it to get tested? It might be the voltage regulator that has died on you. If the alternator is still in the car, and you are looking at the alternator from the drivers side of the car, it is the white rectangular piece (about 2" x 1") that is held onto the alternator by 2 screws. You can get this piece separate for around $20 from Adirondack Auto Brokers 1-877-4-GERMAN. Remove and replace.

If the alternator is still in your car, start the car up (get a jump if necessary) and use a multimeter to check the amount of voltage being produced by the alternator. If it is near 14, your alternator is fine (mine makes 14.4). If it cheks out OK, it might be that the little blue wire that goes from the alternator to the instrument cluster is cut. If this line is cut, the alternator doesn't charge the battery. If your 16v is setup like mine, you will have 1 thick red cable coming from the starter, a brown wire coming from the AC condenser which is grounded to the alternator casing, and a blue wire which is connected to the small post below the red wire. If you have to, check for continuity along this wire. If memory serves me correctly, the blue wire runs from the alternator to the battery (better check Bentley here), from the battery to the fusebox and from the fuse box to the instrument cluster. Check for continuity along all these points. If there is a break in the line, it'll show up. Cut and splice and you are all set.

If you have a Bentley you can follow the wiring diagram and see at exactly which terminal the blue wire connects to the fusebox.

If you have any further questions feel free to send me an email. I am leaving the office in 15 minutes so I might not be able to get back to you until tomorrow. Good luck.

Hey People, I just found out my alternatoe isn't charging.
I need a new one as Fast as possible, but I am a bit tight on cash.
1800VWPARTS has one for $85 with no core charge, this sounds great but I
was wondering if anyone has one for cheaper. All the Places around here
want way to much to rebuild mine or don't have one.
Thanks,
   Randy
