16v timing question

well, after an adjustable cam gear mishap on monday this week, i had
to rebuild my head on my 87 this week.....today i went and installed
the head and put a new timing belt on, ( put a stock cam gear on). I
lined up the flywheel and have the cams lined up real close (i need
to get a torque wrench that goes low enough to torque the cam
bearings down first) i know that the cam timing chain is on in the
correct position and the 2 dots on the cam gears are almost perfect
(perfect enough to tell that the chain is on in the right spot)

here's my problem/question....when i put the valve cover on to keep
everything covered, the notch on the cam gear is about 1.5 teeth off
from the notch on the valve cover........but this is with the valve
cover just sittion on the head, no bolts torqueing it down, and with
a slight turn of the cams needed........

i don't think the head was shaved, but anything is possible at this
point with this motor.....i've had nothing but problems since i put
this motor in (it has run well, but i've had to fix problems that
should not be happening to a motor with only 15k on it) I

Is it ok for the cam gear to be off a little bit?.......it was dead
on with the adjustable cam gear is the only reason i'm curious

i also found out why my lifters were making so much noise.....every
one of them was completely shot.....no spring action left in any of
them.......

on a side not, i highly recommend against anyone dealing with
MOTORTECHNIK....if you want my reasons, email me off the list and
i'll explain.....i'll just say that i'm very displeased with my
experience with them
