The CIS-e system has many sensors that, if busted, can screw things up and
put the car into limp-home mode. I don't have the Bentley in front of me,
but I know that it goes into numerous checks to see if the sensors are fine.

How are your plugs/wires/cap/rotor/coil/hall sender.

A failure in one of these components can lead to terrible problems like you
describe. Check that the distributor is not leaking too much oil into the
cap, etc.

So does the timing light flash at all? Does it look like it "misses" a few
times, and does this change when clamped to different plug wires? How about
if it's clamped to the coil-cap wire?

How are your idle switches. IIRC then if the idle switch is busted, the
computer will think you are "on throttle" and start to vary the timing
according to knock sensor and other feedback. But I could be wrong on this.

IIWY I would check all the ignition components listed above, and follow the
Bentley procedure for checking the sensors/wiring to the brains.

Get back to us with what you find.
