Ah yes, Been there done that.... and its scare the pants off of you when it
does it

BTW the brake light also comes on when your brake fuid level is low.
Check at the wheels to see if you have fluid outside and/or inside your
wheels. (leaking caliper?) brake line severed by a rock (espcialy if you did
not get braided lines.
Check the line from the bowl to each wheel, possible one of the tubing broke
and your fluid exited that way.
Check your proportioning valve I also had one that was pissing directly
downwards unto my power steering rack.

a Bad Master cylinder would give you very bad brakes but fluid would of
remained in the bowl (most cases) (the fluid goes from front brake system to
rear brake system throught the internal valve that is tired/dead.
