High octane won't help valve tap.  It will help avoid pre detonation of
the fuel in a hot cylinder.

- Battery to Alt 12+ (Hot Side) 
Some folks run a good size cable from the battery 12V+ to the Starter
and then from there another to the Alt's 12v output post. Cables overlap
on the Stater's main electrical post.

- Battery - to Frame & Block.
This is usually a two step cable, in it's middle it connects via a bolt
to the crush zone part of the frame. Right under the battery. Finally it
continues on and connects to the side of the block. Folks some times
replace it with two cables of sufficient length that overlap in the middle.

You might add a medium wire from the Alt's CASE (use one of those bolt
ends sticking out the back, the ones that keep the cases halves
together, and run this to a valve cover gasket bolt.

This to _ground_ the Alt, not to get 12v directly to the block.
Therefore ground just the CASE.
