Is this the same game VW played with the Beetle?  You could buy a new Beetle
in '80, built in '80, as a '79 model.  Incidentally, there's a guy on the
VintagVW list with a '56, and he also had one of these '79 models built in
January of '80, during what I understand was the last week of production for
the Super Beetle convertible.  It was in nearly perfect condition.  His wife
was driving it one day a few years ago and it died, and while she was gone
to get help, some guy in a delivery van fell asleep at the wheel and
completely smashed it.
