Dave,
Another tip. Sounds like you may have been trying to turn the eingine using 
the cam pulley bolt.  Turn the engine using the crank bolt(17 mm or 19mm?).  
It's a little more of a pain, but you won't be slipping teeth if your belt is 
not tight.

thanks for the help.  i didn't remove the cam.  what i meant was when i was 
tring to spin the cam to make the lobes point up(valves closed) the belt 
slipped a few notches.  i'm going to try what you told me to do and 
hopefully that'll work.  thanks
