I already had my shit back together when it dawned on me that I should have
taken it apart and cleaned it super good, so I wound up running 2 new
grounds, 1 to the starter chassis and 1 to the chassis of the car itself. No
more starter problems (the diesel starter doesn't hurt either though)

In trying to find my ground problem, I tried to find the attachment of the
neg battery cable.  I can't figure out how to get to the attachment point
for the cable, I'm assuming it's somewhere under the airbox.  What's the
best way to get to the contact point in order to check the connection?
