Axle nuts, Lower tie bar and Crappy work I paid for

Hey List,
I wanted to say thanks for all the info over the last year. Here's
my post for today.
I'm half way thru putting in new bearings in the front. I've got the
hubs off and will have my new bearings pressed in tomorrow morning. I
would have rented/bought the tool to do it on the car but one of the
Tech's at work is pressing them in for free. I think it was the girly
calander out of "SuperBike" last year that opened that door. Anyway,
some questions came up this afternoon. 1) One axle had a nut and
washer holding it on and the other had a self-locking nut. Any thoughts
if I should put on two the same? 2) I put my lower tie bar on. I got
the bar used and it lined up just right with my car. Is there a
distance between the bolts that I should be shooting for? 3) I paid
some place to put on a manual rack last year because I didn't think I
could do it. Well, today I see that they just about removed all of the
threads from the passanger side tie rod end. Since this looks like an
adjustable one, I guess I can just get another end. The question - What
do people use to remove the tie rod end? I got one of those fork things
that looks like it was made for a '68 Buick. I hope I never give up and
let someone else work on my car again!
