[engine] idle hunting...

...are there any on-line tech procedures done for this subject yet? I've
heard some talk about an air/bypass valve? I recently had that funky 2-piece
hose crap out on me, and aside from the high idle, it wasn't doing this up &
down crap.

My current situation is:
-car starts fine
-when coming to a stop sign/light, rpms drop (alt light comes on briefly)
rpms rise to 2000, if I don't tap the gas, it'll drop way low and die.

NOW GET THIS:
If I have the a/c on, idle is PERFECT. Luckily I'm in Florida, but
occasionally we get nice weather...

I really HAVE to fix this because of the side effects of the idle problem:
-when it drops super-low my oil pressure drops too low and then I get a
scorching case of lifter-knock.
-alternator stops charging properly, it charges, but not at the level that
it started at (i.e. 10.5~11 VDC) - (yes, I've verified my gauge by sticking
my multi-meter on the battery terminals).

Sorry for the longer-than-usual post from me.
