Clutch pushrod/throwout bearing

Hey all,

After changing my clutch disc and pressure plate 2 weeks ago, I've only
driven the car around the block twice since but I've been reading up on a
concern I had when re-installing the tranny.

Basically with the brand new clutch parts, I could lift up the clutch
lever on the tranny for like 5 inches on the end with minimal resistance.
And more importantly, the lever didn't even rest on the stop on the side
of the tranny case - it just floats like an inch about it. I'm not
certain if it was like this before I changed the clutch but I think it
was. Either way I thought it would go away with the new parts.. I expected
it to be "factory new" in operation.

So looking at the way the clutch mechanism is operated my guess is that I
have either a worn down pushrod or throwout bearing. When I changed the
pushrod seal I removed the pushrod completely to inspect it but didn't
measure its length or anything. I did notice that one end was shaped
differently than the other.. I didn't pull off the tranny endcap when I
had it out even though my seal kit came with a new throwout bearing
because I had read that throwout bearing failures were uncommon so I
figured it wouldn't be worth the time to replace a part that was in good
shape already. I just assumed it was in good shape, and that if it wasn't
I could change it without pulling the tranny. The seal kit also came with
a little bronze gear -- what is that?

Anyway if anyone can confirm or deny my diagnosis or offer additional
insight I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

-Toby
