[OT]A warning for parents

My wife and I almost lost our 14 month old daughter, Andrea, this weekend.
She was at her grandmothers house and wandered into the backyard and fell
into the pool. She was in there for about a minute before she was found and
pulled out by my wife. She was limp and not breathing. Thank God my wife
kept her head and knew what to do. She immediately started CPR and had her
breathing/crying when paramedics arrived. She spent the last three days in
the hospital recovering and fighting off a slight case of pneumonia.

Please, please, please keep doors to pool areas closed and locked if you have
children or grandchildren of your own or children that may come to visit.
And please take the time to take a CPR class. It made the difference in our
case. My wife and I are both CPR trained (I wasn't there when the accident
happened) and had she not been there, there would have been a few more
minutes delay to get her breathing again since nobody else knew CPR and they
would have had to wait for the paramedics.

It took her less than a minute (about 15 seconds) to get herself into trouble
and thankfully she was found so quickly after she was discovered missing.

We are fortunate to have her with us still with no adverse affects. We were
very worried the first night because she didn't even open her eyes for the
first three hours and when she finally did, we weren't able to tell if she
recognized anybody or if there was any kind of brain damage. Today we were
relieved to see her begin smiling and playing with the things she played with
before the accident. A few hours into the day she started talking just like
she had before the incident. The neurologist expects her to be 100% and
she's pretty much there, just very, very tired. You would be too if you had
been brought back from death.

Guess I just needed to vent and if my story can help prevent even one such
tragedy, I've done my job.

Things like this can really help to reinforce your priorities.
