Yeah,
    The whole basis for that warning is that you dont want the engine to
scream up to redline as soon as it fires. They put that precaution in the
book since thats the *worst* time to bring an engine to redline (oil not
distributed yet).
    Now theres the other thing. Older cis-e injection systems seem to get
'tired' and will actually start faster with 1/2 gas during cranking. All
this does is make less restriction for airflow during starting. It IS safe
to do this, so long as you instantly let up on the gas as the engine first
fires. The idea is you dont want your cold, non-oiled engine going much past
1500 rpm until its been running for a few seconds first.
