You are not wrong. 
I think what Dave meant to convey is that the multigrade synthetics you buy
are generally available in the 0w/5w/10w etc. range, while the conventional
oils usually are in the 10w/20w range.

Huh?  Viscosity is measured, and I thought a spec was a spec.  

Therefore, 10W-40 in conventional oil will be the same viscosity as
10W-40 in synthetic, or one of them is spec'd wrong, no?  Correct me if
I'm wrong...
