TECH >> how to fix tired check rod WAS ---> RE: door rattle question

The position holding capabilities of the door is directly related to the
"strap" VW Part # 144839249 (check rod) that is located inside your door and
that attaches to a flat hinges held in place with a split cotter pin.

Now if you remove the door cover and check inside the front part of the door
(behind the front speaker are) you will find a cover that can pop out. VW
Part #191837323a (boot), you can clean that are as crud will collect. the
(check rod) is held in place with 2 bolts, take them out, and pop out the
cotter pin from the joint between the (check rod and hinge) and you will be
able to examine the item. Most cases you will need to clean and lube.

The check rod has this functionality of holding the door by the mere force
of tension, the check rod is actually 2 flat pates of metal atop each other,
part them a bit (like a bow)->> () <<- and reassemble. that is how I got
mine to be fully functional once again.

Subject: door rattle question

hello list, just wondering if any mk2 folks have had problems with their
drivers side door moving around(enough to make an audible "thud") over
bumps. My car has a small dent from the PO on said door, but opens and closes
the same as the passenger side i.e. just fine, yet seems to not want to stay
half open or fully open .(a function of the strap right?).I'm wondering if
replacing the "post" in the door jamb and the little plastic ring around it
would fix the movement , (ive cleaned and lubed the latch BTW) and a new
"strap" would hold it open better.Sorry this is so long, thank you ,Robert
