Re: Anyone looking for parts?

No one said anything about any of that Dave. People do it on this forum
all the time.

I can tell you haven't been around long enough here to be able to tell the
difference between what seems like a blatant commercial advertisement and
someone asking others to join in a group discount purchase.

Get a grip. That's not what this particular issue is about.

Talk about a ridiculous statement, trying to draw a parallel between
keeping commercials off our list, and political correctness. Once again,
get a grip. It's about keeping spam at a distance. And like *anything*
else in life, if no one objects it must be an alright behavior.

Not once it's issued in a public forum, see above about no one objecting. I
also see that you choose not to take me up on my offer of emailing me
personally if there where any questions.

Yep. Perhaps the only real way people arrive at an understanding of sorts
is to tell them about it. Pretty much what I did. And it does seem to
be pretty much across the board, unless I've missed something that has
gone on here on the list (which is distinctly possibly I might add).
Here, let me include the email I sent out about this the last time we ran
up against something a bit like this:

----begin included email from quite a while ago-----

First of all let me state that this is by and large a great list, with
a pretty good signal to noise ratio as compared with other internet
mailing list and forums. I like the people, the topics, and will
continue to support us (the list and the website) to the best of my
abilities for the foreseeable future.

Anyway, there have been a few issues concerning groups buys as suggested
or organized by members of this list, and some people have asked me as
the list maintainer to weigh in. I'd like to start by saying that
it's not an easy thing to do...

Let me tackle the easy one first: the elusive topic. It's a well known
internet mailing list / netnews fact that not everyone is cognizant of
the drifting topic, and people have conversations that sometimes would
be better served with a change of topic. That's a fact. People either
don't know any better, are too lazy, or just don't care. The _right_
thing to do is to alter the topic to reflect what people are actually
writing about, but it doesn't always happen. Deal with it, ignore it
if it doesn't pertain to you. One of the first thing you have to do
when dealing with others on the internet is: Grow Thicker Skin; as it's
usually not personal. I'm not advocating anarchy, as sometimes a
simple reminder of what is appropriate is all that is needed.

The more difficult topic is how to address the use of this list as
a forum for businesses to compete with each other. I'm in favor of
free enterprise, but not at the expense of other peoples good will.
What I mean is that, our mailing list should not be used as a business
advertising medium. Organizing a group buy for parts or whatever
should be encouraged, by individuals or even businesses. There is
however a blatant commercialism line that I'd expect people not to
cross, use good judgement. List based public price wars do not
make the participants look good. Always remember that with just a
little more effort _anyone_ could probably get a better group based
or individual price from Virtual World Parts or Adirondak Auto Brokers
as they probably deal in more significant volume with the supplier,
or shipper or whatever...

A business can't be 'operated' within our list, there are too many
problems in doing so. Keep the purely business propositions and
dealings in 1:1 email; again it's time for using best judgement as
every situation is different.

To end on a more lighter note, you have to be jackass of the Weiler
caliber to get booted off this list. :)

Thanks for reading, if someone takes issue with what I've had to say
here, we can have an extensive offline conversation about it, as it's
rather OT for the Scirocco list.

I hope this refreshes people's memories concerning what might be
considered inappropriate commercialism in this forum. Now Dave has
a great point, in that this is not currently in the Scirocco mailing
list intro, an oversight I assure you. The reason I hadn't realized
it is that when I joined, the list was hosted elsewhere, and an
'acceptable-use-policy' of some sort did get sent out when someone
joined. I'll see about getting that fixed up. I hope this doesn't
blaze up into a flame war.

I mean come on, when someone uses a statement like '...what I currently
have in stock as of today...', it's pretty much a business proposition.
