Sean-
  there are several key "positions" on your switch.  the resistance of each
position should be either infinite (open circuit) or zero (closed circuit),
depending on the key position.  A wiring diagram, for your particular car,
will tell you which wires should be open and which should be closed for each
key position.
  the buzzer simply indicates a closed circuit, it is not intended to give
you an Ohms number.

Hey,
    I've been trying to diagnose my ignitions switch using a digital 
multimeter.  I'm not real sure how to use it, as I borrowed it from a 
friend.  If I'm testing for continuity across terminals, what result 
indicates a faulty switch.  When I use the audible ohmeter mode of the 
multimeter, it beeps and registers a changing resistance that varies from 0 
to 300 to 600 ohms.  It jumps around in that range with no particular 
pattern over a period of a few seconds.  Does this indicate a faulty switch?

  I know that a good switch should show no resistance, but my weird results 
have me unsure on whether or not the switch needs replacing.  What's the 
deal?
