RE: r-134a a/c conversion q's

Finally, someone that agrees that the real reason for the demise of R12 is
strictly economic. When you have a patent, you have a licensing monopoly for
20 years. To maintain that monopoly, you have to make a quantifiable
improvement in the product to get another patent issued. 1) R12 may
contribute to the breakdown of ozone 2) R12 is heavier than air 3) ozone @
ground level is considered a pollutant 4) the thinning of the ozone layer in
the atmosphere is an annual, natural occurrence. Ask yourselves how a
heavier than air refrigerant gets to the atmosphere's ozone layer? Seems to
me that destroying ground level ozone is a good thing. Think about all the
cities that have ozone alerts issued in the warmer months. I'd not heard
that HC134a is carcinogenic. What's your source for this? Is the can labeled
as such? None of mine are. There is however a caution about the dangers of
inhalation injury. R12 can also be fatal when inhaled. A friend's sister
died as a result of this. If there's so much black market R12 available, why
don't the prices drop a little? As far as conversions go, 134a is a less
efficient refrigerant and runs a higher head pressure. The higher pressure
invites more leaks and system failures than R12. If you do a conversion,
replace every o-ring possible, check every hose and connection, replace the
filter/drier and above all, evacuate the system with a vac. pump to remove
all the moisture.

> I just got my Caddy's A/C fixed and went through this in detail the
mechanic. His take is, don't bother. To do it properly you have to replace
the condenser and evaporator, but you can't get the right ones for VWs.
R134a isn't as efficient as Freon to begin with, and without the larger
condensor & evaporator it's pretty much useless. He thinks that Freon will
pretty much always be available via the black market and repackaged as
U.S.-made so even the shops can't tell it's black-market. Plus, R134a is
going away in 20010 or so because it's carcinogenic.

fwiw, the only reason that r-12 is not being made and sold in the
states any more is because dupont lost the patent rights on it and this,
that, and something else happened. we sell vw condensers and evaporators
for vw's where i work. don't know what the difference between a r-12 vs.
r134a model would be. the local vw shop did the retrofit and got the
temperature in the car down to around 36°F.
