Daun, 

Don't make Dan over-react.  It may be electrical.  Don't trust those
guages.  Especially if it was something sudden.  As for the flickering of
the oil temp guage, your wire is probably coming loose at the sender on
the oil filter flange.  Damn Auto-rocco was doing the same thing, flicking
about....

But, it would be good to check your cooling system Dan, make sure the fan
is still working.  If the cooling system seems to be working correctly,
start digging into your dash wiring for shorts.
