[tech] Request for input (was: RE: VW Sports Coupe Family Complete! (for now...))

Jean-Claude: It's a G60, not the VR6. The G60 is a beefed-up 1.8L 8v with a
supercharger, so it should retain almost all the good handling of a lightweight
Scirocco. If you take care of the supercharger (which does need very specific
maintenance) you can see 225-250hp without any problems.

OK everyone,

I know that the G60 doesn't have the best rep for a street car. I'm not 100%
sure that I'm going to build a G60 Mk1 Scirocco, but I'm leaning toward this
route because I'm building the Scirocco for a new autocross class called Street
Modified. Turbos can be difficult to drive smoothly on an autocross, and a
high-strung 16v doesn't have much torque in the low/midrange, which I need. It
is also MUCH cheaper than a 1.8T conversion (I got a whole running donor car for
$1800), and more reliable/servicable than a custom turbo setup.

Like I said, I'm still not 100% on the plan. If anyone has any input, I'm all
ears!! If I decide against the G60, I'm sure I can sell the Corrado for at least
what I paid.

Here are the goals:
- must have absolute maximum power that can be utilized by a 1900lb car with 9"
wide Hoosiers (I guesstimate this to be somewhere in the 200-225HP range...for
no particularly good reason)
- must have a flexible torque curve, with plenty of power available from
2000-2500 RPM
- must be a VW/Audi engine block, head, and transmission
- must not add significantly to the overall weight of the car
- must not require cutting of the firewall or floorpan
- must be "street legal" (but doesn't necessarily need to meet emissions)
- must run on 93 octane pump gasoline
- must be as inexpensive as possible (duh)

'Dem's the rules. Whattcha got?

If anyone has any G60 expertise, I can use all the help I can get!! My big
question is: can an 020 tranny handle 200HP?

TIA!
Neal

I thought there was a discussion about the VR6 making the Scirocco
nose heavy?

Would it not make more sense to fix and sell it so you can get another
engine? It might handle better with a 1.8T.
