Leaking petrol tank - questions

My tank has sprung a leak. The car is MKII CIS with in-tank lifter pump. I
haven't had a chance to look to see if it is something easy to fix, like the
flex hose connecting the filler neck to the tank or the lifter/sender plate
o-ring - here's hoping! There is a damp patch round where the flex-hose
connects to the tank but I haven't been under the car so I can't see if it
is running down the side of the tank.
My question is - is it possible to drop the tank enough to be able to see a
leak on the top or sides of the tank without dropping the rear axle. I'm
assuming that, once I disconnect the fuel lines and sender/pump connections,
there's nothing else connected to the tank, other than the filler line. Is
that correct?
If I do have to drop the axle, any hints/BTDTs would be appreciated. How
long is it likely to take to swap a tank, if I need to?

TIA,
Ewan Hopkins
