Okay, here is the deal...

I don't think my alternator is charging.  Starting is erratic.  All the main 
grounds and connections are clean (starter, battery terminals, back of 
intake manifold).

Running or not, there is no voltage between the alternator case and the 
field (little secondary lug under main lug on alternator).  This means my 
voltage gauge reads nothing.

There is 12VDC between the alternator main lug and case (running or not), 
does this mean the alternator has a decent ground?  The alternator may not 
have a decent ground to the engine because the arm and bracket are 
powdercoated, but I have a small wire (14awg) going from the case to the 
neg. battery terminal.

The car runs, the lights dont dim when I rev it, but it wont start after 30 
min of driving (weak starting, turns over but wont crank).
