RE: MFA swap woes

Toby,

Yes, you can just splice the wire to the oil temp. gauge (the green one, I
believe) and bring it up to the cluster at the white connector, locking tab
side at pin 2. As for the location of the temp. sensor, from the etka
diagrams it looks like it's mounted on a bracket behind the bumber on the
right side. I just stuck mine through the hole in the engine compartment
for the antenna cable, it seems to read pretty accurate there. Email me
back if you any other questions about the MFA install. I just did this om
my 83 8v and am writing a tech procedure for it.

As for the MFA button being funky, yes these switches just go bad. Haven't
figured out a way to crack it open without breaking it, but if you have let
me know.

I noticed the MFA cluster you have is from an 8v w/120 mph speedo. I tried
the reverse of what you're doing (I put a 120 mph speedo into a
16v-140mph-MFA cluster into my 8v) and the miles, MPH, and MPG functions did
not work. The speed sensor was not to blame because it's the same part #
for both clusters. This leads me to believe that the MFA computer itself is
particular to speedo and engine code, and the etka section on MFA clusters
shows separate MFA circuit boards for different engine codes and speedos.
So, I would expect that only driving time, OAT, and oil temp. will display
correctly if you use the 8v cluster with the 140mph speedo.

The only thing I have to figure out still is if I can use the oil temp
sender from the stock oil temp gauge for the mfa as well (just by splicing
the wire)... we'll find out..

Also, could somebody tell me where the stock location is for the MFA
outside temperature sensor on the Scirocco? Is there a pre-drilled hole in
a body panel or something that I can pop the sensor in to?

Thanks,

-Toby
