Yes, the oil helps the shock dissipate the heat.

An ounce or two of any grade motor oil is all you need...

Pour a little bit in the strut housing, insert the strut cartridge, pull
the cartridge out and see how high up the oil is.

You want the oil level to be halfway up the cartridge body.
