I asked a friend who is a A/C mechanic how to do this.

Obtain the following:
Empty container of R-12.
Old style hoses (before the advent of R-134).
Bucket big enough to hold the old R-12 container covered with ice.
Lot's of ice.

>From what I was told, the ice covered R-12 container will suck out the
refrigerant from the a/c system. Hold on to the old R-12 it's worth its
weight in gold. (about $60.00 a pound) 

May I suggest reading any books by Dixie Lee Ray. She explains why this
freon emissions causing the ozone hole is a bunch of hooey. How can a
molecule that is heaver than air get  to the stratosphere? There are also
certain kinds of microbes that love freon.
