I'll ask the obvious...:)  Uhhhh, you did plug up the A/C pass thru holes, 
right?  If you just removed the A/C lines and didn't put something back in 
the firewall, you probably would hear belt and exhaust noise.

OK, I know you checked that so I'd say it must be a vacuum line going to the 
vent control head.
