the part number system is fairly straightforward if you can remember
how it works. i only know a little bit of it, but this is how it breaks
down. there are three sets of numbers - AAA BBB CCC. sometimes there
is/are number(s) and/or letter(s) after the last set. the first section
(the A's) designate the type of car or chassis. for example, scirocco
specific parts are 531 and 533 . 535 parts are for a corrado. 171 parts
usually indicate an a1 chassis or rabbit parts. the second set of
numbers (the B's) is the type of part. switches, sensors, and the like
are in the 900's. lenses are 945's. cables are 957's. wheels are 601's.
c/v axles and ball joints are 407's and 498's. the last set of numbers
(the C's) is the specific part. the letter(s) or number(s) after the
nine digits serves to differentiate between parts. ie - 171121101AB is a
hose for jetta; 171121101AM is a hose for a scirocco*. likewise, if ther
is a part number with 'BR' after it, this usually indicates that i was
made in brazil. so, to make a long story short, all vw numbers are like
this. porsche, bmw, and merceds parts are like this as well.

* - (it's worth noting here that i've found these hoses to be
interchangeable (with a little triming on the jetta hose), but the price
difference to be about $14 cheaper for the jetta one).
