polished intake prep

Finally my car goes in on Tuesday for its new P&P head, Schrick 260/276 cams,
and polished 50mm intake. I just finished running 4 cans of brake cleaner
through the upper and lower intakes to get any/all remnants of the polishing
compound and other crap outta there. I then attempted to spray the polished
<properly cleaned and prepped> valve cover with clear high-temp engine
enamel. I laid on a thin first coat, and the crap started to dry gray in
some areas. Shit! I have since knocked it all off with brake cleaner and
once again have a shiny (but unprotected) cover. I haven't done anything
to the outside of the upper intake yet.

What did I do wrong, or what should I use - if anything? The intake I'm not
so worried about, as it's easy to get at should it need a good shining up
from time to time, but the valve cover will be buried and needs some kind
of protection..
