I had very similar symptoms when my CIS Jettronic box had water in it and
was shorting out.  When the car would die, the frequency valve shut off,
thats how I knew it had to be injection related.  Yet, your saying that
his tach was showing 200 when he was flooring it to keep going?  Maybe
time to look at the ignition system.
