quieting the beast

ok, heres what i have,
tt downpipe and what appears to be stock cat back (factory resonator i think), and a cheezy muffler.
now for the questions:
1. i want to quiet this thing down a bit (now that i got a/c i realize how loud it is with the
windows up). i figure i can do it with a non-extreme-flow (i.e. normal) muffler, but will that be
enough to tame the beast?
2. how do i get a muffler shop in SC to install said muffler on my non-cat exhaust? perhaps i can
convince em my resonator is a cat :P.

any help on this appreciated.
