My detector is mounted in the center of the windshield for the best
reception. As far as lasers, a laser detector won't detect it until the
laser hits you and then it's too late...basically the detector is letting
you know that you got zapped. The cops will aim their laser at something
flat, like your license plate and there's a plate cover which will disrupt
the laser signal and the cop won't get a reading.

The radar/laser detector needs an open view to recieve the EM signal. the
engine compartment is bigh shielded box and will reduce the effectiveness
of the radar while blocking the laser completely.
