Hey Jay, its good to know I'm not the only VW to throw belts off at the
line.  I did that twice at Cayuga last year.   It is kind of nerve
racking watching the alt light the whole way down the strip, and the
coolant gauge rising.....   My fastest time was with the alt. belt
still sitting at the line.  15.81 (I know that's slow, but my head
gasket was leaking a bit)
