Something is definitely not right - I did the same
thing (all new rods / bushings etc.) and had NO play
whatsoever.  After about 2 mo's it developed a 1/2"
side to side looseness, and after almost 4 years a
bushing finally gave after letting a friend drive and
now it has about an inch front to back play... fixing
next week.

If not the ball, maybe you didn't clip the selector
rods down, or left a bolt out somewhere?

There should be almost no play with all new bushings.,
