The view from home - or, Daun looks back on Cincy 2k+1 (very loong)

The last of the guests just left, marking the end of yet
another Cincy Scirocco list party.

Things got under-way Friday. While I was out gathering the
"official" time for the rally, John Van Vuren showed up,
towing the shell of Kevin Wenzel's ex-autocross car. ('81
S - I'll be putting it back together.)

Others slowly started to trickle in. Other early folks
were Pete Walsh w/ Brian Haygood, and Eric Person / Eric
"Saltyweasel" Soltwedel & his gf Katy.

By evening the driveway was getting pretty full of 'rocs,
the garage was full of people, and the beer was plentiful.
Still, the 'rocs kept coming. Rebecca Ahn showed up around
1 AM, introduced herself as Bill Scarince's fiance...
said he couldn't make it, but had told her that if she took
his car she'd be welcome. Bill - hang onto her - she's
awesome. (Not to mention she and Pete Walsh took 1st in
the Rally!)

Next morning saw the arrival of the Potterman. We had done
our best to keep it a secret... most people were
surprised. Of course, it was raining. It's been raining
here for most of the last two weeks, so the yard was
saturated. In between rain showers, the tech procedures
began... Cheapass Ron got a lot of stuff done thanks to
the Brians etc. Neal Tovsen started attacking the '87
parts donor. Eventually it was ready to move, so with the
help of 10 or so others, we picked it up and carried it out
of the barn, then flipped it over on it's roof so Neal
could remove the floorpan with a Sawzall. While all this
was happening, Drew MacPherson was swapping on a new hood,
removing some suspension I sold him etc. I took his old
hood, cleaned it up, and started passing around a Sharpie
marker so everyone could sign it. The hood is full of
signatures, and I'm sure there's a lot of folks who didn't
put their name down.

Potterman had a bunch of "Cincy Treffen" shirts printed up.
They're really nice, $10 apiece. (And yes, there are
leftovers) All proceeds are going to Brett to help pay for
all the server equipment he's invested in to manage
Scirocco.org. Buy at least one today!

Dinner never really happened. For one, our chef had
something come up with work at the last minute and couldn't
make it down, plus with all the people here we figured that
someone was gonna be stuck grilling for hours.... ah
well, the best laid plans.

Sunday was Rally day. This was the first time I tried to
plan something like this. It was a bit of effort but it
was well worth it from the comments. Who knows, maybe I'll
do another next year.

More tech-procedures followed. Rob Lahey got his new TT
exhaust installed by Peter (thescirocco!). Also, we
flipped the '87 back over and loaded it on the trailer -
Paully & others ATTACKED the shell to the point that the
car looks like something out of the Cincinnati riots.

Many folks started heading out that afternoon. Finally
around 6 PM, most of those who were left (about 10-15
people) went on a cruise which consisted of driving back
through some of the rally route (AWESOME road) and a
freeway jaunt. (I let Van Vuren drive my 16v, Potterman
drove Ben's '81 Scirocco) A few of the group departed, and
the rest (8 of us) went to dinner.

I got up this morning and did a little cleaning - not much
was required - thanks for picking up after yourselves.

I did notice that the taillights are missing from the '85
parts car - who got 'em? That and the wiper wind deflector
had been claimed by Saltyweasel, but when he went to pull
it someone had snagged it...

Thanks again everyone for coming and not complaining *too*
much about our freak weather this year. I promise the
driveway will be fixed for next year. (We've been trying
to work something out for the last month or so, just didn't
get done in time obviously)

Time to change the sig file again...
