RE: air fuel meter....

Realize that air flow meters (AFM) are notoriously inaccurate. The best
indication of what is going on in your combustion chamber is an exhaust gas
temperature guage (EGT). These guages give instantaneous and accurate
readings whereas the AFM are limited by the available resolution and narrow
band of the stock O2 sensor. Wide band O2 sensors are available but the
O2/AFM combo can cost more than a proper EGT system.

Besides a lean AF ratio is not what kills your motor, it is the associated
high combustion chamber temperatures. Go with the EGT for reliable results.
An AFM should be used to provide greater clarity only *after* the EGT is
known.
