Driving school event in Parumph....... (short Novel)

Some may of known about a driving school that was put on in Parumph
Nevada this last weekend. There were about 30 cars and 7 instructors. I
was lucky enough to be one of those instructors.

I had planned on towing my Scirocco out there and getting some track time
in the car. The tow vehicle had a bad tranny and wasn't gonna be ready in
time for the event so I packed up the Roc and drove out in it instead.

Unfortunately myself (MK-II), Potterman (MK-I) and the Cadenheads (MK-I)
were the ONLY A1 cars there! Much to my surprise, many of the cars that
alot of us have seen at the ND show were there!! I was very impressed
with the cars that were there. Especially the Passat Wagon (5 spd) 1.8T!
I was lucky to get to drive alot of these A3 - A4 and B5 cars from stock
1.8T's to supercharged VR6's. I preferred the 1.8T's over the VR6's, much
to my surprise. (There goes my VR6 build idea!) So now my wife wants to
sell the Jetta and buy a GTi VR6. Notice she didn't want to sell the Roc!
She's a keeper. :)

This was a 2 day event and even tho the high temp for the day wasn't much
over the 50 degree mark (HEY! that's cold for us so-cal people!) we still
had zero wind, clear blue sky's and 2.2 miles of open road to play on. It
really was a great weekend for 98% of us!

The down points of the weekend were few and nobody was left behind when
it was over. We had one blown motor. (91 GTi blown bottom end.)
Fortunately he trailered the car in.

One broken clutch in the Cadenheads Scirocco. (Thanks to Eurosport for
supplying them with a pressure plate and a brand new disk to fix their
problem. Not to mention a few special tools and brake cleaner. Raffi is a
class act all in his own! ) I really loved doing a clutch job with NO
POWER TOOLS!! Man im spoiled!

There was another A2 GTi that had a problem with his clutch bolts comming
loose. Apparently he just picked up the car from his mechanic on the
friday. He's got issues with him that im sure he's already had out by
now. Raffi helped him out as well.

Another A2 GTi blew a radiator hose off the radiator. Put it back on,
tightened the clamp, added water and it was all good.

Then we had the cars that went off. I was lucky in my early morning spin
in turn 5A and my cold tires refused to stick in the rear. My fault
completely. No damage, no harm other than my ego. I happened to be in a
supercharged 97 GTi VR6 that spun in turn 9 and we ended up off in the
sand. No damage there but the driver was pretty shaken up. Understandable
since out safety briefings were all about staying on course or risk
rolling the car. The other big off was the Passat Wagon (5 spd) 1.8T
which spun comming out of turn 3 and while the ass end was comming
around, managed to cross the track and slide about 60 feet up an
embankment. The only damage was to the right front tire. The impact of
the sand unbeaded the tire off the rim. Still, there wasn't even a
scratch on the rim even after we dig the rim out of the sand. He put on
the spare (Still had it on the rear!) tire, drove to the pits, rebeaded
the tire and remounted it for more runs. (that's so cool!)

Considering that the majority of the students had never been on a track
(And the first few laps confirmed this) they learned very quickly and the
event was a complete success when it came to safety. We had a great bunch
of students. I was disappointed that none of them were from the list. We
need to change that.

So the main reason for this post was to get the word out about a possible
next event probably next October. I know its -very- early in the game but
start thinking about it. We need to get thru the ND show, Cincy, WF
events first but keep in mind how fast things come up on us. This event
just might take really early planning for some of you be a part of this
awesome event.

Seeing that there were -other than A1's- there, I didn't think anyone
would of given 2 shits about my car. Much to my surprise, I had been
asked by MANY of the students to go for a ride in my car. (My head
wouldn't fit into my helmet by the end of sunday! LOL!!) Potterman got
the same requests and he had a line of people in helmets waiting to go
out with Mike. I had a great time and look foreword to the next event
even tho I worked my ass off in and on the cars all weekend long. I sure
hated to see it end. Its been a long time since ive had that much fun in
one weekend.
