[TECH]: New timing belt+compression=xmas miracle?

so the original plan was to buy a junker while i fixed my dub, but after realizing what a HUGE pita it would be to get georgia tags, title, license, insurance (double what it costs in MA!), and seeing as it was finally above freezing for a day, i decided to replace my timing belt and see what happened. i replaced my belt, but none of the pulleys, alternator, or ac compressor. i figured out a pretty good tensioner tool replacement also. i used a fork and bent the 2 middle tines in. the outer ones were the perfect width apart. then i grabbed it with some vise grips and tightened the locknut. very easy. checked compression: #1-3 were >180, and #4 was 165. so i'm thinking maybe i didn't bend valves after all. tried to start it (everything still off), just to see. still no spark. keep in mind i screwed with the ignition system when i thought that that was the problem. i replaced the distributor, but obviously couldn't time it since the timing belt was broken. but even if the timing was off i should still get a spark, right? i couldn't troubleshoot further cause it got dark and cold, but i'm left with a couple of questions:
1) is my head ok (the one on the car :)?  does ok compression=no bent valves?
2) does my no spark problem have to do with the alternator being disconnected or did i screw something up when i played with the ignition (very possible)? my distributor is turning, btw. tia,
