Ok, Ok, you can blame me. :)  Look at it like this, if there
was sooo much movement that could cause the inner joint to actually
move, all the slack in both CV joint bearing tracks would have
to be at the limit of travel to point of binding and so much
more force would have to be applied to get it to move...an unlikely
event I believe.   I think the rings are there as an extra measure of
safety for maintenance, protection in extreme failure conditions (like
a ball joint failure, but you'd have bigger problems probably), and to
make sure the installer put them on far enough. :)  The real fact
of the matter is that I used Jims 16v conversion as a test bed
for this and it's been working fine for like 8,000 miles or something
like that. :-) (sokay Jim, put the knife down...hey man, you were
really stuck there, and after thinking about it, decided it would be
ok...no really, I considered it carefully!! <argh, gasp, choke, stab! stab!)
