MMmm.....MAYBE $6K is enough.  I just sat here and added up the big expenditures 
I remembered on my '81 Convertible.  Not counting buying the donor 16V (which was 
a small part of the budget!), I hit $8K without even trying hard.

That included the car, three large shipments from Potterman for engine, trim, and 
incidental parts, a suspension, engine rebuild components from Mark @ AAB, the 
rebuild itself, paint job...

...body kit, intake polishing, carpeting...I'm now thinking I could find $9K.

Depends on where you're spending.  If it's just on the engine, you should be able 
to do it, but if you're gonna do it, do it right. :)
