Does your shifter feel real loose like it's in water?  If so I have similar
issues with my 88 16v.  The problem I have is the shifter bushings are worn
out.  A bushing kit is only about $9-13 but installation isn't the most fun
thing.  If you want some real fun, pick up a nice short shift kit with a
weighted rod and slap that in there while your at it.  Shifting will be very
nice after all that.  If bushings arn't the problem, I'm a little lost then.
Someone on the list will know however.
