coolant hose mod

I'm looking to change the coolant hoses in my rocco soon and I'd really
like to do away with that perversely expensive top hose in my 16v.  I
have some ideas bumping around in my head, but thought I might check the
list and see if anyone else has done this in an easier manor then what
I'm thinking.
