Mark,

You will want to weld a bung onto the downpipe as otherwise the sensor tip
will be against or through the far wall of the pipe. It cost me $10 to have
the local Muffler King weld one on mine, off the car.

You could prolly get away with tapping a hole in the manifold, if you are
using a cast piece and not headers.

If you do not install a three wire sensor, you'll want to mount it as close
to the head as possible to keep the operating temperature up.
