Jason,
I have a Neuspeed 8V bar on my 78 MK1 with a 16V motor. You have to flip the 
bar backwards and it will sit right against the raintray. It is a tight fit 
but fits just fine. I got the idea from the Spring 2000 issue of VW Power 
that had a 81 S with a 16V and the 8V bar flipped backwards.
