RE: A/C retrofit - quick Q

In my limited experience with the conversion process (1 Ford Probe & 1 VW
Rabbit Sportruck) I've had luck doing exactly what you said. Vacuum the
existing system- usually for 5 minuets or so, or until the needle stops
moving. If you have a good gauge set, you won't even have to disconnect
anything but the hose to the vacuum, because the gauges have on/off valves.
You put in your oil, then the R134a, and you're good to chill.

Subject: A/C retrofit - quick Q

Hey Roccer's,
    I'm all out of R-12. I got the retrofit kit from Wal-Mart for $33.95
(autoparts stores want about $50 for it). My understanding is that I should
hook up a vacuum to the system to pull out any moisture, air, residual R-12,
etc. How much vacuum should I pull? If I do pull a vacuum on it, will the
fittings still close, or will I loose the vacuum as soon as I disconnect the
pump? If that's what happens, how do I get around it?

Sincerely;
Brian Haygood
