AC options?

In my continuing renovation of my '88 16v, I went down and grabbed
some coolant for my AC and recharged it the other day. Now, for some
quick history, before my car sat untouched for a few, my stock AC
compressor blew out, and there was also a problem with the lines, so
I had it replaced with an entirely new system. Well, when I had it
replaced the AC shop gave me a lot of lip service about EPA
regulations, and fees and fines and the lot, and ended up replacing
the stock freon system with a newer "more environmentally friendly"
system.

I never had a chance to drive the car with AC since the system was
installed and before the car went into storage, so the past couple of
days have been my first chance to test out this new AC. To get to the
issue, not only does the system not cool as well as the stock AC, but
it drives my engine temp through the roof, and robs every ounce of
power from my car! Now, obviously the AC needs to be replaced,
because as it stands it is unusable. My question is: What are my
options in terms of other ACs?

Please keep in mind that I am in Texas, where AC is not really a
luxury option, but more of a required component.

The goal is to overcome the deliberate nature of the process.
