I assume you are refering to something I said. If so then read on. If not

VW makes their own mufflers.

I dont know how much they cost.

I dont have a definite answer as to why most 16V owners replace their shit. 
Stock piping is stainless formt he factory. The only things that wear out 
are the downpipes and the mufflers. Maybe its Joe dumbass who takes his car 
to the "We Do Exhaust On All Cars" shop and they cut and weld the shit until 
its soo fucked up that everything MUST be replaced to make it right again.

And to be honest I think 16V exhaust diameter is almost the same as 
aftermarket. BTW its also madrel bent (stock exh that is).
